Eagles could make history with maiden European crown

Crystal Palace tonight take on Rayo Vallecano in their first ever European final.

The Eagles are hot favourites to lift the Conference League trophy, as Premier League clubs look to complete a clean sweep of the European competitions. Aston Villa last week won the Europa League and Arsenal meet Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on Saturday.

Oliver Glasner kept most of his stars in reserve at Selhurst Park on Sunday, as the Gunners won on the final day of the season, but would have been concerned at the sight of Adam Wharton being forced off soon after coming off the bench.

This game will spell the end of Glasner’s tenure at Palace, after the Austrian announced he would be leaving the club upon the expiration of his contract.

Vallecano are fresh off an eighth-placed finish in La Liga, just pipped to a place in this competition once more by Getafe, who eked them out by a single point. Managed by Inigo Perez, they saw off BlueCo side Strasbourg in the last four to book their place in Leipzig.

Crystal Palace vs Rayo Vallecano is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off tonight, Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

The match will take place at the Red Bull Arena.

Crystal Palace vs Rayo Vallecano team news

For the Eagles, there are five injury concerns.

The biggest are defender Chris Richards, who Glasner admitted was “50-50” for the Conference League final after suffering two torn ligaments in his ankle against Brentford, and Adam Wharton, who limped off at the weekend.

The England midfielder has a “sore ankle”, according to his manager, but both were able to train on Tuesday ahead of flying out to Leipzig with the squad. It remains to be seen whether they will be fit to start.

Eddie Nketiah is out for the season with a hamstring problem, while Borna Sosa is another who is touch-and-go for this game after missing the Arsenal defeat.

Cheick Doucoure is also out after another injury-hit campaign.

As for Vallecano, they have no injury concerns.

This should be a game that Palace know and believe they can win.

Just one game stands between them and a maiden European honour, and it would cement Glasner’s place in the club’s history books forever.

They have the firepower, they have the quality, and they have the belief.

Crystal Palace to win, 3-1.

This will be the first meeting between these two clubs.
