Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi continues to establish himself as one of football’s brightest young leaders, and his latest interview with SPORT offered a glimpse into the mindset that has made him a key figure for both club and country.
The 19-year-old has become an undisputed starter for Spain during the FIFA World Cup, playing a major role in the team’s impressive defensive displays while also addressing several Barcelona-related topics.
From his admiration for Lionel Messi to his thoughts on Julian Alvarez, Anthony Gordon and Hansi Flick, Cubarsi touched on almost every subject surrounding his career.
Spain have looked one of the most organised sides in the tournament so far, and Cubarsi believes the improvement has come from finding the right balance at both ends of the pitch.
Looking back at the opening matches, the Barcelona centre-back explained:
“We started very well at the back. In the attack, in the first game against Cape Verde, we lacked more circulation.
“In the second half, we improved, with more aggressiveness and intensity, and it was reflected on the pitch, and we got a good result.”
The youngster also admitted he is enjoying his football on the biggest stage.
“I feel very fast, I feel comfortable, I am feeling very good and comfortable.”
Despite already becoming one of Spain’s defensive leaders, Cubarsi insisted there is still room for improvement.
“I always try to be better every day, whether I’m on a good streak or not so good. I try to help and be there for the team so we can win.”

He also highlighted the importance of Spain’s dressing room, explaining why the blend of experienced internationals and young talents has worked so well.
“We have a mix of experience and youth. Ultimately, that combination is key for us.”
With Spain preparing to face Uruguay in their final group stage match, Cubarsi acknowledged the challenge awaiting his side.
“We know, more or less, that Uruguay will be giving it their all – they’re real fighters. I’ve got Ronald (Araujo) in my team and I know what they’re like.
“We need to play our own game, be ourselves, and play with good ball movement and long periods of possession.”
The defender also revealed that he and Ronald Araujo exchanged messages after the World Cup draw.
“We spoke when the group draw was announced about how we both wanted to beat each other, but we haven’t been in touch recently. But I’ll be seeing him very soon.”
Speaking about his Barcelona teammate’s fitness, which has been a worry in recent weeks, Cubarsi added:
“We’re a family in the national team, and at Barça too. We all help each other out. We’re really happy that Ronald is at the World Cup.”
Cubarsi was also asked about one of Barcelona’s long-standing transfer targets, Julian Alvarez, and admitted the Argentine forward would pose a difficult challenge for any defender.
“He’s a player I’ve faced many times before. I know how he plays; he makes a difference, and yes, he’s hard to mark. I’d have to stay alert.”

When questioned about whether Alvarez would be the right signing for Barcelona, the teenager preferred to back the players already at the club.
“Right now, I’m focusing on the fact that we have Ferran and Gordon, who’s a new addition.
“And in the end, whoever comes will be welcome, and if not, I’ll stick with my teammates through thick and thin. We have a great team.”
Cubarsi also praised new Barcelona arrival Anthony Gordon after facing him in European competition.
“Yes, we’ve played against him in the Champions League. I haven’t watched him regularly in the Premier League, but he’s a very intense player, with great range and who gives his all for the team, and that’s very important.”
The interview also produced one of its most memorable moments when Cubarsi spoke about Lionel Messi.
Asked if facing the Argentine icon in a World Cup final would be special, he replied,
“It would be a dream come true, especially because it would mean I’m in a World Cup final.
“It would be a chance to win it. If it were against Messi, it really would be a dream I’ve had since I was a child.”
He then explained why Messi remains his biggest football inspiration.
“Our whole family have always supported Barça, and ever since I was a child, he’s always been our idol and role model, and I’m really looking forward to meeting him,” he said.
