Cuca has been registered in the CBF's BID. According to Diario Do Peixe, he could take charge of Santos against Cruzeiro at Mineirão on Sunday at 16:00 in the eighth round of the Brasileirão.
He is seeking Santos' first away victory, with the team winless for almost a month. Santos are the first side outside the relegation zone on six points, with one win, three draws and three defeats, scoring 10 and conceding 13.
The board dismissed Juan Pablo Vojvoda after defeat to Internacional on Wednesday 18, then moved quickly to agree and announce Cuca on Thursday 19.
Cuca takes over for the league and will also lead campaigns in the Copa do Brasil and the Sudamericana in April. He has a contract to the end of the year and arrives with assistant Cuquinha and fitness coach Omar Feitosa. It is his fourth spell after stints in 2008, 2018 and 2020/21.
His arrival had the backing of president Marcelo Teixeira and some directors, but drew backlash from fans and on social media over a 1987 case in Switzerland involving accusations of sexual violence against a minor.
In 1989 there was a conviction in absentia, later annulled by the Swiss courts in 2024 for procedural reasons, without reassessing the merits. The ruling no longer stands, but the court did not declare innocence or guilt.
The case later became time-barred. The victim, who was 13 at the time, attempted suicide then and died 15 years after the abuse, and the family did not pursue the case further.
