Signing a striker to replace Robert Lewandowski is the top priority of FC Barcelona in this summer transfer window, but the Blaugranes are also not ignoring other positions of their team, and the defense is another area which they can strengthen this summer.
In addition to negotiating with Al-Hilal for Joao Cancelo, the Catalans are also keeping an eye on some center-backs. One such center-back who is increasingly being linked with them is the Argentine Cuti Romero.
The experienced defender is facing a crucial summer. Having made his way to the final of the World Cup with Argentina, he is clear that he wants to leave his current club, Tottenham, and does not want to play again in England. He is also ready to force a departure from the London club, but none of his suitors is willing to pay the €50 million Spurs are asking for him.
In such a context, SPORT reports that Romero can leave the Premier League side on loan with a purchase option, and is prioritizing a move to Barcelona. The Blaugranes, for their part, have already met with his agent, but have not progressed beyond that point. However, they can consider the Argentine if he appears as a market opportunity.
The Catalans particularly like Romero for his aggressiveness and positioning in defense, but owing to the overbooking in the backline, they are not too keen to make a move for him.
Meanwhile, Cuti Romero is also attracting the attention of other clubs across Europe, with both Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan considering taking the loan with purchase option route with him.
For now, it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will enter the race for his signature, but a lot of stars will have to align for it to happen, mainly because they already have enough center-backs in their squad and also because they are being linked with other players for this position as well, including the Spanish international Aymeric Laporte.
