Dan Neil has joined Ipswich Town on loan for the rest of the season, with Sunderland confirming he will leave as a free agent in the summer. The move signals the closing chapter of his 18-year association with his boyhood club.

Neil made 201 appearances, helping secure promotion from League One and then the Championship. He captained Sunderland at Wembley as they returned to the Premier League.

With minutes scarce this season and his deal running down, he has chosen promotion hopefuls Ipswich to play regular football. He is likely to reassess his options in the summer.

Neil thanked coaches, team-mates, staff and supporters, saying he was proud to have played his part in taking Sunderland back to the top flight. He described captaining the club as a boyhood dream realised and said he remains a supporter for life.

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman hailed Neil’s legacy, praising his resilience, leadership and impact on standards on and off the pitch. He said Neil would always be part of the club as he embarks on a new chapter.

The club also issued thanks for his contribution and wished him well for what comes next. Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna said the midfielder adds versatility and experience, including last season’s Championship promotion, and believes he will be a strong addition for the run-in.
