Darwin Núñez has cut a frustrated figure so far this season, seeing limited game time and even more limited returns on Merseyside.

The Uruguayan has only started three of Liverpool’s ten games in all competitions. Only one has been in the Premier League - against Bournemouth - with the others being a League Cup tie against West Ham and last week’s Champions League affair against Bologna.

He has only seen out the full 90 in the West Ham game and, as a result, only has one goal and one assist to his name this season.

The goal was something spectacular, a curled effort off the inside of the far post from the right-hand side of the box. Darwin was clearly emotional after breaking what was then a 14-game goalless streak for the Reds.

Only taking 311 of the 900 minutes available thus far, Darwin appears to be somewhat out of favour with new head coach Arne Slot.

Amid this, GIVEMESPORT are reporting that Spanish giants Barcelona 'remain interested' in acquiring Núñez.

There were links between the £85 million man and the Catalan outfit over the summer that, obviously, did not materialise. Yet the GMS report states that Barca are aware of it being a make-or-break season for the striker.

Hansi Flick’s men currently sit top of La Liga with 24 points from nine games. And whilst starting striker Robert Lewandowski has begun the season in fine form - 12 goals in 10 games in all competitions - he is 36 years old and still the only out-and-out striker in their squad.

Núñez could still adequately rotate with the Polish striker as he creeps closer to retirement.

His contract does run through 2028, however, meaning that Liverpool wouldn’t have to relent on an asking price unless they really wanted Núñez out of the door.

Diogo Jota has taken the majority of minutes in the centre-forward position this season. Reports have also levelled links to Viktor Gyokeres and Omar Marmoush to Liverpool as possible replacements up front.

Barcelona reportedly have not made any solid moves or initiated contact with either Núñez’s camp or Liverpool over a potential move. With Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk’s contracts up at the end of the season, it appears that Liverpool have more pressing matters before they turn to moving more players out of the club.
