Michael Carrick’s arrival at Manchester United has coincided with Harry Maguire’s return to the starting eleven from injury.

The towering centre-back kept Erling Haaland quiet in the Manchester derby and dealt well with most of the crosses at Arsenal.

Maguire was a pivotal part of United’s side when Carrick assisted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and it seems the interim head coach will rely heavily on the England international this time as well.

However, the 32-year-old is nearing the end of his time at Old Trafford, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season. His exit should compel United to look for a new defensive leader.

Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano could be available on free transfer

Manchester United are long-term admirers of Bayern Munich star Dayot Upamecano, who turned down a move to the Premier League giants at the age of 17.

The imposing French defender, who is now regarded as one of the best centre-backs in Europe, remains on United’s radar.

His contract situation at Bayern should further pique the Red Devils’ interest.

The 27-year-old’s contract in Munich runs out at the end of the season, and Bayern are trying to convince him to renew his deal.

Bayern Munich getting tired of waiting

According to Sport1 (via Fichajes), Upamecano has had a ready-to-sign offer from Bayern on the table for weeks, but the France international continues to make the Bundesliga leaders wait.

Bayern are reportedly pushing themselves to their financial limits to get the deal over the line, and impatience behind the scenes is starting to grow.

It is claimed the Bayern board are irritated by the tactics of Upamecano‘s camp. Furthermore, the club’s hierarchy have no intention of improving their current proposal, leaving the ball in the defender’s court.

This is where United could take advantage, as they are set to save a significant amount on their weekly wage bill with the exits of Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and, in all likelihood, Maguire.
