The row between Ligue 1’s main broadcaster DAZN and LFP – Ligue de Football Professionnel – has escalated further with DAZN demanding €573m from Ligue 1’s governing body, as reported by RMC Sport. DAZN and LFP are at each other’s throats regarding Ligue 1’s domestic TV rights. DAZN has refused to pay Ligue 1 clubs what they were owed in full this month as the platform considers they have been duped by LFP regarding the number of subscribers they hoped to gain in acquiring Ligue 1’s TV rights.
DAZN also considers that Ligue 1 clubs are not doing enough to provide exclusive editorial content and that the means to fight piracy are inadequate. DAZN has therefore referred LFP to Paris’ Commercial Court. The broadcaster believes they are owed €264m in compensation for “breaching” the contract signed with the LFP. What’s more, DAZN are demanding a further €309m from LFP for “market dishonesty”.
L’Equipe believes that DAZN is adamant LFP did not give the broadcaster’s executives all the elements regarding Ligue 1’s market distribution before signing a €375m per year deal. The outlet adds that this dispute could drag on for months if not years and the fact DAZN initiated legal action can only mean the broadcaster wants to recoup its losses.
