David De Gea has offered support to Tottenham’s Antonín Kinský after the 22-year-old was substituted 17 minutes into a 5-2 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid.

Coach Igor Tudor handed Kinský his Champions League debut, leaving out Guglielmo Vicario. The Czech stopper conceded two of Atletico’s opening three goals inside the first 15 minutes. According to Sky Sport Italia, Paolo Di Canio questioned the early change and suggested the ex-Juventus coach might pay a high price in his coaching career.

The Fiorentina goalkeeper wrote: “No one who hasn’t been a goalkeeper can understand how difficult it is to play in this position”. He added: “Keep your head up and you will go again”.

Tudor’s selection and the swift substitution left both the coach and the understudy goalkeeper under scrutiny after a bruising night in Madrid.

It also capped a bleak evening for Italian football, with Atalanta, the only Serie A side left in the round of 16, beaten 6-1 at home by Bayern Munich.
