Oskar Zawada changed the game in the 65th minute with a composed finish, as Groningen beat Ajax 3-1. The substitute's brace tilted a level contest decisively towards the hosts.
He first found space in the centre to convert Marvin Peersman's headed pass (65.), completing a swift second half move.
Seven minutes later he rose to glance in a cross from Thijmen Blokzijl (72.). He then departed injured (76.) after a tireless shift against the Godenzonen.
He scored with both of his two attempts, produced two key passes and made three touches in the box, showing how his penalty area presence gave Groningen a direct outlet.
Because Groningen attacked early deliveries into the area, his movement across the front post twice separated him from markers and ensured Dick Lukkien's side controlled the decisive moments.
Groningen rise from 11th to 10th and visit PEC Zwolle next. The Godenzonen host Sparta Rotterdam next.
