Deco explains why Joao Cancelo is a game-changing signing for Barcelona | OneFootball

Barcelona sporting director Deco has shed light on the club’s decision to bring Joao Cancelo back, making it clear that the Portuguese defender’s arrival is about far more than just adding another name to the squad. 

Speaking to the media, as reported by SPORT, Deco explained why Cancelo was seen as a unique opportunity and how his signing fits perfectly into Barcelona’s sporting and financial reality.

Deco began by stating the immediate impact Cancelo brings to Hansi Flick’s team. 

From the club’s point of view, this is not a luxury addition, but a player who genuinely expands Barcelona’s tactical options. 

“Cancelo gives us more solutions that we did not have before,” he said.

Salary adjustment

Going deeper into the operation, Deco acknowledged just how difficult the deal was to complete. 

Financial limitations made it an unlikely move at first, but several key factors aligned in Barcelona’s favour. Deco explained,

“He is a player of quality, of level, and an operation that could hardly have been carried out. 

“It happened by chance, because he has an agreement that allows him to leave his club, and because he is a player who has always dreamed of coming to Barça. 

“Whenever he has come, he has even adjusted his salary, and it fits perfectly with what we can do here.”

Deco also framed the signing within Barcelona’s winter strategy. Rather than making multiple moves, the club focused on improving quality in targeted areas. 

“In January, our objective was to improve the quality of the squad. I think Cancelo improves the team and that’s the most important thing,” he explained.

Cancelo is scheduled to undergo his medical this Saturday morning in Barcelona, the final step before his return is made official. 

Once completed, Flick will have at his disposal a proven, high-level player who fits the club’s needs.
