Liam Delap says scoring his first Chelsea goal was among the best moments of his career so far.
The 22-year-old netted in the 3-0 Club World Cup win over ES Tunis as the Blues progressed to the round of 16 to face Benfica.
Delap signed for Chelsea from Ipswich earlier this summer and has impressed in his first outings for the club.
And reflecting on scoring his first goal in Chelsea colours, he said: “It’s an incredible feeling.
“I came here to score goals and to get the first one is a good feeling.
“I think there’s always that little bit of, not relief, but extra little bit of confidence. I think coming to a place like this (Chelsea), you’ve got to have confidence.”
Asked where that goal ranks among the best in his career, he replied: “Definitely it’s right up there, coming to this size of a club and getting your first goal, it means everything to me. It’s definitely special.”
Delap faces competition from Nicolas Jackson for a place in Chelsea’s starting 11, but earned a start against ES Tunish with his team-mate suspended following his red card against Flamengo.
And the Englishman says starting life at his new club with a tournament has been beneficial for him.
“This tournament has really helped me settle in because if we were back at the training ground, everyone would be disappearing at 3 o’clock and here we’re together all the time,” he said.
“It’s a great way to get settled in and everyone has been really helpful.
“The boys have really helped me settle in. The manager I know really well and I’m familiar with his style of play so hopefully I can just keep continuing and growing in this team.”
On facing Benfica in the round of 16, Delap added: “That’s why I came to this club, to play on big stages like this so I’m really excited.”
