There was joy for Sweden in the international action involving Eintracht players on Tuesday evening, with several others also featuring in friendlies. Here is a round-up of the final matches.
Sweden booked their place at the 2026 World Cup with a 3-2 win at home to Poland in front of almost 50,000 spectators at the Friends Arena. Eintracht midfielder Hugo Larsson watched the drama from the bench.Türkiye qualify, Denmark fall at final hurdle
Can Uzun can also dream of a call-up for the World Cup after Türkiye sealed qualification with a 1-0 win away to Kosovo on Tuesday night. Uzun was not included in this squad having recently returned from injury.
However, Denmark – without 32-time international Rasmus Kristensen for the play-offs – will not be heading to North America this summer. Following a 4-0 semi-final win against North Macedonia, the Danes were defeated in dramatic fashion on penalties against Czechia in Prague.
Five Eagles were involved in friendlies with their senior national teams, with all of them avoiding defeat. Aurèle Amenda played the second half of Switzerland’s 0-0 draw against Norway in Oslo, and it was the same result in the meeting between Farès Chaibi’s Algeria and Uruguay, which was held in Turin. Chaibi came off after 80 minutes in his first appearance since the devastating quarter-final exit at the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
Ritsu Doan led out Japan at Wembley in their friendly against England, starting alongside ex-Eagle Daichi Kamada in midfield. Doan was substituted in the 71st minute as his team saw out a 1-0 victory.
Theate and Skhiri already in North America
In the early hours of Wednesday, Arthur Theate’s Belgium and Ellyes Skihiri’s Tunisia also played their second friendlies of this international window in a World Cup host nation. Theate, who was rested in the 5-2 win over USA four days earlier, came on after 72 minutes in a 1-1 draw with Mexico in Chicago. Captain Skhiri played the full 90 minutes for his country for the sixth game in a row in a goalless draw against Canada in Toronto.
Much closer to home, Love Arrhov netted his first goal in his ninth appearance for Sweden U19s. However, his opening goal after 12 minutes in the Euro qualifier at the DFB Campus in Frankfurt was not enough to earn his side victory against Greece, with the match ending 2-2. The Swedes finish the qualifying group in fourth place, meaning they will not be taking part in this summer’s European Championship in Wales.
Højlund victorious with Denmark U21s
The U21 Euro is not taking place until summer 2027, and Denmark still have every chance of being there. Oscar Højlund and his team-mates followed up their 6-2 win in the opening qualifier with a 4-0 victory over Wales. Højlund played the full match, as he did in the first three qualifiers before his injury in November.
