Ousmane Dembélé delivered France's first World Cup hat-trick since Kylian Mbappé's treble in the 2022 final, scoring three times before half-time as Les Bleus swept aside Norway 4–1 in Boston. Mbappé assisted the first two goals before Aurélien Tchouaméni set up the third, with Dembélé repeatedly cutting in from the right to finish with his left foot.

Thelo Aasgaard briefly gave Norway hope at 21', but Mike Maignan's penalty save from Jørgen Strand Larsen at 50' ended any comeback hopes. Désiré Doué added a fourth in stoppage time as France secured Group I leadership with a perfect nine points. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Norway v France.

Winners

Ousmane Dembélé (France)

Dembélé produced the standout individual performance of the World Cup group stage with a devastating first-half hat-trick. His three goals arrived at 7', 20', and 32', each following the same unstoppable pattern—receiving on the right, cutting inside onto his left foot, and placing shots beyond Egil Selvik.

The winger's movement repeatedly found gaps in Norway's defensive structure. Mbappé's vision released him for the first two finishes, while Tchouaméni's assist completed the treble. The Norwegian defence simply could not adjust to his signature move, even knowing it was coming.

His hat-trick marked the first by a French player at a World Cup since Mbappé's triple against Argentina in the 2022 final. Dembélé departed at 65' with his job emphatically complete, leaving France with attacking depth and options heading into the knockout rounds.

Mike Maignan (France)

Maignan produced the decisive intervention of the second half when he dived to his left to save Strand Larsen's penalty at 50'. With France leading 3–1 and Norway building momentum after winning the spot-kick through Oscar Bobb's run, the goalkeeper's stop extinguished any realistic comeback hopes.

The save was not his only contribution. Maignan denied Oscar Bobb twice in open play—at 64' after the winger cut inside, and again at 72' following a French turnover. His positioning and decision-making when rushing from his line at 52' also prevented Mbappé from needing to chase a through ball.

Without Maignan's penalty save, Norway would have been within one goal with forty minutes remaining. Instead, France managed the remainder comfortably, and his interventions ensured the victory never felt threatened after half-time.

Loser

Jørgen Strand Larsen (Norway)

Strand Larsen endured a frustrating night as Norway's focal point in attack, failing at the two moments that mattered most. His penalty at 50' lacked conviction—struck too centrally without sufficient power or placement—and Maignan saved comfortably to deny Norway their best opportunity to mount a comeback.

Earlier, the striker had squandered a clear chance at 14' when he controlled well in front of Dayot Upamecano but sent his right-footed shot high over the crossbar from close range. Both misses came in situations where Norway needed their main striker to deliver.

Deputising for the rested Erling Haaland, Strand Larsen worked hard as a target man but could not provide the cutting edge Norway required. His penalty miss at 3–1 proved particularly costly, removing any realistic hope of challenging France's grip on the match.
