Derby County are eyeing up a surprise transfer move for experienced Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy.

That is according to Alan Nixon in a fresh update via Patreon, with John Eustace looking to add further experience to the ranks at Pride Park after an extremely active beginning to the current transfer window in DE24.

The Rams narrowly escaped an immediate relegation back to League One last term, and, in a bid to progress up the Championship table during the 45-year-old's first full season in charge, have already confirmed four new additions, whilst plenty of other names continue to be linked with potential moves to this part of the East Midlands.

Derby County eye potential Sam Morsy deal but face competition

Morsy has been on the books at Portman Road since August 2021, having joined from Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee on an initial three-year contract during the club's four-season-long stint in the third tier.

However, the past three seasons have been quite the ride for the Egyptian midfielder, having captained the East Anglian outfit to back-to-back promotions under the guidance of Kieran McKenna, eventually featuring in the Premier League for the first time in his career at the age of 32.

After penning a two-year extension with the Blues, Morsy featured in 33 top-flight games last season, starting 31 of those. But, following Town's immediate return to the EFL, it was reported that the Wolverhampton-born man could leave the club on a free transfer amid interest from sides in the Middle East.

Nixon's aforementioned update states that the midfielder could still leave Town this summer "if the right offer comes in", with Derby said to face competition from outfits abroad.

In total, Morsy has made 165 appearances for Ipswich, scoring 10 times and providing a further 19 assists.

Sam Morsy deal would add to Derby County's extremely shrewd transfer dealings

Despite not getting any younger, the capture of Morsy would only add to the Rams' extremely smart transfer dealings thus far, which comes in the form of Andreas Weimann, Danny Batth, Richard O'Donnell and ex-Luton Town striker, Carlton Morris.

Three of those additions, as well as Morsy, have a wealth of experience when it comes to competing at the top end of the Championship, which is where Derby will no doubt aspire to return too after a rocky period.

It is clear that Eustace is also in the market for new blood in the centre of the park, having recently been linked with a move for Luke Harris of Fulham and previously, John Swift, following his release from West Bromwich Albion, although they are more creative options - FLW also exclusively revealed in June that Blackburn Rovers skipper Lewis Travis, who is more in the Morsy mould, was of interest too.
