FLW's Derby County Fan Pundit did not hold back when discussing the potential move
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
There could be a shock departure from Derby County in the final few days of the transfer window, with Kane Wilson potentially departing the club to play two levels below with MK Dons.
Football League World exclusively revealed that the ambitious League Two outfit are in talks to sign Rams right wing-back Wilson, who has worked under Dons head coach Paul Warne previously at Pride Park, with the BBC's Dominic Dietrich further adding that a bid from the Buckinghamshire outfit is likely to be accepted.
Wilson, who was named League Two Player of the Season when at Forest Green Rovers in 2022, has been a key figure for Derby - when fit - since his arrival from Bristol City.
The 25-year-old made 49 appearances across all competitions in the Rams' promotion campaign from League One under Warne's guidance.
His importance to the side had seemingly grown since John Eustace replaced Warne as manager, with the current boss describing Wilson to BBC Radio Derby in April as "a fantastic young player" who he'd "love to keep working with".
FLW's Derby County Fan Pundit, Shaun Woodward, did not hold back in his assessment of the potential move when asked about his immediate reaction to the news.
"I am shocked, because, I basically think it’s a load of rubbish if i’m totally honest, I just can’t see it happening," Woodward told FLW.
"Kane Wilson’s very much part of our plans, he’s one of our most attacking players, one of our most exciting players when he’s fit, and he’s just coming back to fitness now so he’s a really important piece of our jigsaw moving forward.
"I think he offers excitement, he gets you on the edge of your seat, he can beat a man, he’s strong.
"Yes, he does need to work on his end product, but, that’s something hopefully Eustace has been working on with him when he’s been fit in training."
It's fair to say Woodward is bewildered about the prospect of Wilson dropping down to League Two, even with the connection to Warne at MK Dons.
"He’s a real asset to Derby, so I cannot see him dropping down two leagues to go and play in League Two, he’s far better than that, he wants to prove himself at Championship level i’m sure and hopefully he’ll stay and do that at Derby," Woodward added.
"I just couldn’t see him going to a League Two side, albeit with Paul Warne, who he knows and obviously Paul Warne trusts him.
"But, to me, if he’s got any kind of interest in progressing his career, he stays at Derby, because that’s a real, real bad move in my opinion."
For perhaps anyone looking at this potential deal, it's hard to work out why Wilson would drop back down to League Two - four seasons after literally being the best player in it - if money wasn't the reason.
As one of the more progressive right-backs in the Championship last season, Wilson certainly offers something in the final third, but as mentioned, his defensive capabilities are perhaps lacking, and Max Johnston's arrival from Sturm Graz may have been the final straw for the former Bristol City man.
