It was a weekend of derbies in the WSL, as Manchester City beat bitter rivals Manchester United 3-0 and Arsenal thrashed Tottenham 5-2.

City are still nine points clear of Chelsea having beaten Marc Skinner’s side 3-0 courtesy of two goals from Vivianne Miedema and one from Kerstin Casparij.

After the game, manager Andree Jeglertz said his side need to just enjoy the position they are in: “First of all, enjoy the moment. We need to do that.

“We’ve talked about that the whole time, no matter what – we talk about one game at a time – and that is how it is.”

In another big derby this weekend, Arsenal put Tottenham to the sword with a 5-2 win. Alessia Russo bagged a hat-trick in the space of 22 minutes in the first half.

The Gunners are now two points behind second-placed Chelsea, and nine points ahead of Tottenham.

After the game manager Renee Slegers said: “Playing at the Emirates with our fans, starting, fast fuelling energy, we did that really well and of course early goals always help.

“I think at the moment the whole squad is ready to perform. The squad is in a really good place.”

Chelsea tightened their grip on second with a thrilling 4-3 win over Aston Villa. The Blues were rocked by their 3-1 Women’s Champions League defeat to Arsenal in midweek but bounced back against Villa.

The two sides were level at 3-3 for most of the game, with all of the first six goals coming within the first 35 minutes of the match.

But midfielder Sjoeke Buskin found the vital winner in the 82nd minute to lift the mood around Kingsmeadow.

Manager Sonia Bompastor was pleased with the win, but not with the defending: “It was the most important thing for us to win this game. In terms of performance Villa put the battle up there for us. They scored first and I think we had a great reaction, from losing 1-0 to score three goals in the first half.

“If I’m being honest it is not good enough from us to concede three goals. Villa only had three shots on goal and scored three in the first half, so we need to be better in defensive aspects, but in the end we found a way to win the game.”

Liverpool beat Everton 3-2, and are now eight points above bottom of the league Leicester City. Ceri Holland scored twice for Gareth Taylor’s side and was the player of the match.

West Ham drew 1-1 with the London City Lionesses, and after being 1-0 down for much of the game, they scored an equaliser in the second half thanks to a brilliant volley from Oona Siren.

12th placed Leicester succumbed to another defeat, this time a 1-0 loss at home to Brighton. Relegation is not yet confirmed, but Rick Passmoor’s side have not won or even drawn a game since the 14th December.
