Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been ruled out of the club’s upcoming pre-season tour with a hamstring injury.
Onana endured a tumultuous 2024/25 season, which saw him make numerous high-profile errors that dearly cost United in games. In truth, he has never really looked convincing since his move from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023.
There are doubts over his future at Old Trafford, with United believed to be open to offloading him this summer. He has been linked to the Saudi Pro League and Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco but concrete offers for him have yet to arrive.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United value the Cameroonian at £30m. It’s also been suggested that United don’t see the goalkeeping role as a pressing concern right now, as they have more urgent gaps to fill elsewhere in the team.
Now, The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has revealed that Ruben Amorim is considering bringing in a new goalkeeper after Onana suffered an injury in pre-season training.
McGrath explains, “Manchester United have been dealt a massive blow with André Onana ruled out of pre-season tour with a hamstring injury. Ruben Amorim is now weighing up whether to buy another goalkeeper before the Premier League season gets under way.”
“Onana, 29, has suffered the problem this week as players returned to United’s training base at Carrington, with early assessment fearing he will miss six to eight weeks of action, pushing him to the brink of making the curtain-raiser against Arsenal on Sunday August 17.”
The Telegraph note that United are hopeful Onana will be fit by the time the season starts but they still have Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton in their ranks.
United also hold academy goalkeeper Radek Vítek in high esteem, all the more so after his strong performances on loan at BW Linz in Austria.
A final decision on whether to press ahead with plans to secure the services of a goalkeeper to provide cover or even competition has yet to be made.
Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez is an option for the Red Devils but at the moment, nothing is going on because of Villa’s high valuation of the World Cup winner.
Other names on United’s list include Senne Lammens of Royal Antwerp, Lille’s Lucas Chevalier and Parma’s Zion Suzuki.
