DFB Pokal Quater-finals | Hertha Berlin vs SC Freiburg: Preview and Prediction

Midweek blues got you down? Fear not, the DFB Pokal quarter-finals are back! On Tuesday evening, 2. Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin host the Bundesliga’s SC Freiburg. With Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart already through to the final four, it’s time to see who will be joining them.

Hertha Berlin

Hertha are currently sat in 6th spot in the 2. Bundesliga, with a possibility to challenge for promotion if they can turn some of their draws into wins. From their last five league matches, the Berliners have drawn four and one won, beating SV Elversberg 0-3 last weekend, a brilliant result in itself.

Coming up against a solid Bundesliga side looking to secure Europe this season is going to prove difficult for the home side. This will be the first time they’ve faced top-flight opposition in the DFB Pokal this season, having only played teams within their own division. However, with the home advantage and a relatively packed Olympiastadion, Hertha have more than enough ability to give a good account of themselves on Tuesday evening.

In particular, look out for winger Fabian Reese, who already have nine goals and five assists to his name this campaign. Luca Schuler will most likely lead the line for Hertha, having scored six goals in 10 appearances this season for his club.

SC Freiburg

Freiburg are the firm favourites here, despite their recent form being very mixed in recent weeks. Perhaps one thing you can expect from Freiburg is emotions. Following their 1-0 win against Werder Bremen last week, head coach Julian Schuster unleashed an epic and emotionally driven rant based on the emotions within football.

Following a VAR call, which sent off Johan Manzambi in the 50th minute, Schuster couldn’t quite understand it, and in such a tight game, it led him to be more theatrical on the side as his side managed to get over the line.

“I was just upset about the foul,” Schuster told Sky Germany after the full-time whistle. “And at no point was I complaining about the yellow card decision. It’s a shame that people can’t tell the difference. Because I feel passion and emotion should be tolerated. Sure I received some yellow cards that were justified and that I take full responsibility for,” Schuster added later at the post-match press conference. “In this situation, it was just about my emotions in that precise moment. “And if you want to tell me that my finger-wagging was too theatrical, just give it a rest.”

The main man on the pitch to watch out for is undoubtedly Igor Matanović. From the four Bundesliga games the 22-year-old forward has started this season, he’s netted an impressive five goals.

Whilst Freiburg will be the favourites here, both sides have talent to cause each other’s defense on Tuesday evening – we should be in for a good game.

My prediction: Hertha Berlin 1-2 SC Freiburg
