Didier Deschamps has paid tribute to Éric Roy following his death, praising his expertise and warmth. The France coach said in a statement from Boston that Roy was a highly competent coach and an engaging personality.
He highlighted Roy’s results with Stade Brestois, notably qualification for the Champions League, as proof of his deep knowledge of the game and of players.
Deschamps had presented him with the Ligue 1 coach of the year award two years ago at the Trophées UNFP.
He also praised Roy’s determination in his fight against cancer. Away from the pitch, Deschamps came to appreciate him and will remember a deeply human man, offering condolences to his wife, children and loved ones.
Assistant coach Guy Stephan also expressed deep sadness, recalling he coached Roy at Olympique Lyonnais for two years and describing him as a conscientious professional. They stayed in contact and he always enjoyed seeing him. Stephan said Roy will leave a major void at Stade Brestois, his success underlining the strength of French coaches, and he is thinking of Roy’s family.
