Didier Deschamps now holds the record for most World Cup wins as a head coach, reaching 18. Four victories this year have taken him beyond the previous mark.
France’s attacking output has grabbed attention, yet the bench has shone in the United States, as reported by L'Équipe.
He has overtaken Helmut Schön, who recorded 16 World Cup wins with the Mannschaft from 1964 to 1978.
Although absent and replaced by Guy Stéphan for the 4-1 win over Norway, Deschamps remained in charge, so the record fell on Friday. For those not counting that match, Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat of Sweden confirmed it.
Another landmark is in sight, the most matches coached at a World Cup. Deschamps has overseen 23 games, or 22 without Norway, closing on Schön’s 25. A semi-final would draw him level, a final could take him beyond.
The last-16 tie against Paraguay on Saturday offers a chance to add to his wins total.
