Gary Lineker was impressed by Martin Zubimendi’s contributions in Arsenal’s Nottingham Forest win at the Emirates. The Spanish midfielder made significant contributions in both areas of the pitch as the Gunners imposed themselves on their opponents throughout the encounter. Such domination resulted in a 3-0 win, the Gunners third win of the new Premier League campaign.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Gary Lineker was left impressed by the Spaniard’s involvement. He opened the scoring with an outrageous finish from outside the penalty area, before scoring the third and final goal – assisted by another hero of the day Noni Madueke – with an equally impressive header. It was not just the fact he scored two goals, the manner in which he finished off the chances really impressed the former Premier League man. As quoted by the podcast:
“Zubimendi’s a player, I’ve seen him in La Liga. He’s that classic little Spanish player that they produce that is just comfortable in front of the back four, he’s happy to receive the ball, he’s very comfortable and confident. Didn’t expect him to bang in a screamer and a header.”
His finishes also caught some of the Arsenal players off guard, with Cristhian Mosquera notably in disbelief after he scored the header. Aside from his two exquisite finishes, Zubimendi also bossed the midfield against Nottingham Forest, disrupting and progressing play at the same time. His overall performance also earned him the Player of the Match award for his efforts in just his fourth competitive match for the Gunners. Following his big money switch in the summer, the Spaniard is settling in nicely in the Arsenal squad. He had produced mixed displays so far, but it is evident nonetheless.

Next up for Martin Zubimendi and Arsenal will be a return to Spain. The midfielder will be coming up against a club he knows all too well, Athletic Bilbao. Arsenal play the Basque club in their Champions League opener on Tuesday night and Zubimendi will look to get one over a former rival, as Athletic Club are Real Sociedad’s bitter rivals.
Wasn’t Zubimendi on fire on Saturday?
