Lazio’s pursuit of Union Berlin defender Diogo Leite has hit a setback after a club-imposed medical deadline expired, putting the move in doubt.
According to The Laziali, Lazio wanted post-injury tests completed by 31 March, but approval for the medical has not arrived. Financial terms are in place, with the Porto-born centre-back ready to sign a three-year deal, and he can agree a pre-contract for the summer. He would be their second free signing of 2026 after Villarreal left-back Alfonso Pedraza.
Sporting director Angelo Fabiani had identified Leite as a left-sided replacement for Alessio Romagnoli. Lazio tried to bring in the Portuguese in January when Romagnoli was close to joining Al-Sadd, then pushed discussions to the summer, when the 27-year-old will be available on a free.
The club are also considering a wider defensive refresh, with Mario Gila potentially leaving and Samuel Gigot out of the picture.
With the deadline missed, Lazio must decide whether to extend their timeframe and wait for the medical green light, or move on to alternatives. They have also been linked with River Plate’s 22-year-old defender Lautaro Rivero.
