After welcoming Celta Vigo to Spain’s capital for a La Liga clash, a dismal all-round performance culminated in a 2-0 defeat.
As much means that Real Madrid have won just one of their last five league fixtures, slipping four points off the pace being set by table-topping arch rivals Barcelona in the process.
Throughout this time, Xabi Alonso has nevertheless thrown his full backing behind his players, defending them from criticism at every turn.
As alluded to above, though, post-Celta, the Spanish tactician at last put his foot down.
Drawn on the performance put forth by his players at the Bernabéu, Alonso sniped:
“The players’ effort and intensity tonight? Disappointing, to be honest.
“We were better with 10 men than with 11 tonight. Simply because at 10 men, at least we started running and working hard.”
