According to reports from journalist Toni Juanmarti via SPORT, it seems that the relationship between Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal at Barcelona has reached a high point.

This growing connection between the two players, who are differentiated by an age difference of 19 years, is evident on the pitch, where their teamwork is flourishing.

Interestingly, though, it was not always like this. In November 2023, social media was buzzing after a video showed Lewandowski seemingly ignoring Yamal’s attempt to shake his hand following Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Deportivo Alaves.

It must be noted that at Bayern Munich, Lewandowski was used to playing with wingers who constantly aimed to move towards the centre of the pitch.

This style of play was ingrained in him at Bayern, but Barcelona’s La Masia academy has a different approach, and it took time for Lewandowski to adjust to Yamal’s way of playing.

There were moments when Lewandowski felt that Yamal should be looking to pass the ball to him more often. However, Yamal stood his ground.

Following a disappointing end to the 2023/24 season, Hansi Flick specifically asked Lewandowski to be patient with the younger players and promised to improve the supply of passes to him.

At the same time, the manager encouraged Yamal to maintain his bold playing style but to learn when to take risks and when to support the centre forward.

One significant moment that marked a turning point in their relationship came when Lewandowski sent a message of congratulations to Yamal after Spain’s victory over England in the European Championship.

This was a clear sign of respect and could be considered the start of a much more positive dynamic between the two players.

Pre-season training was key to their relationship

During pre-season, the bond between Lewandowski and Yamal grew stronger. Although they are not close friends off the pitch, they have developed a mutual respect and enjoy their time together.

Lewandowski, a seasoned veteran, now recognises that Yamal is no longer just a young talent but a key contributor to the team. Meanwhile, Yamal appreciates Lewandowski’s experience and listens to his advice.

The improving chemistry between them was on full display in Barcelona’s match against Valladolid. Yamal provided an assist for Lewandowski, who celebrated the goal with Yamal.

Their connection was even more visible during the match against Girona, where they frequently combined on the pitch and were seen laughing together on the bench.

Though Lewandowski and Yamal come from different generations and lead different lives, they have found common ground on the football field. Lewandowski has already scored four goals and provided two assists, while Yamal has three goals and four assists to his name.
