Media attention was rife ahead of the encounter, with the Red Devils having secured four wins in a row – over Tottenham, Fulham, Arsenal, and Manchester City – ahead of the fabled fifth match.

Secure a win in London, and Frank Ilett would fulfil his viral promise of cutting his hair after five consecutive United wins.

It’s fair to say Rooney was far from impressed with Ilett’s antics after day 493 of the “no-cut” challenge rolled into view.

“I’d put him to the other side of the country – he’s doing my head in,” the former striker spoke on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.

“We’re talking about Michael Carrick and Man United trying to win a fifth game in a row, and the whole thing is about this guy getting his hair cut.

“I bet he’d be devastated if United win their fifth game in a row, because all of a sudden he’s irrelevant.”

Ultimately, it wasn’t meant to be for either The United Strand or Wayne Rooney, as Michael Carrick’s men needed a last-minute goal from Benjamin Sesko just to escape with a point from the London Stadium.

Tomas Soucek had put the hosts in front early in the second half with a close-range finish.

Could Manchester United win their next five games?

Manchester United are set to next take on:

  • 23 February: Everton (A)
  • 1 March: Crystal Palace (H)
  • 4 March: Newcastle (A)
  • 15 March: Aston Villa (H)
  • 20 March: Bournemouth (A)

If ever United were to win five games in a row, snatching three points against West Ham would have arguably been the easiest route.

Instead, Carrick and Co. are now staring down the barrel of two renowned tough away trips to Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and Newcastle at St. James’ Park. Even Bournemouth, with a mixed home record this term, can’t be discounted!

And the reality is that a clash with fellow top four hopefuls Aston Villa will hardly represent easy preparation either.

The hope for Man United is that they’ve already overcome some pretty sizeable hurdles in their nearly run of five games, beating both Arsenal and Manchester City in the space of just over a week.

We absolutely take Rooney’s point, of course, in that the most important thing for Manchester United is winning games consistently and earning a place back in the lucrative top four spots.
