Domenico Tedesco will take charge of Bologna on a contract to 2028, with an option, reinforcing how his stock abroad outstrips his standing in Germany after almost four years without a club there.

The announcement drew more than 1,200 replies on X, mostly from Fenerbahce fans. He had been sacked in late April after only his second league defeat. SPOX reports that he also drew approaches from England and Germany.

Appointed on matchday five, Tedesco went 22 league games unbeaten and in January delivered the Super Cup to Kadiköy for the first time in 11 years. Chaotic scenes at two airports, in the Turkish capital and on his arrival in Stuttgart, underlined the bond with Fenerbahce’s support.

His reign weathered upheaval, Ali Koc was replaced by Sadettin Saran after 13 days, captain Mert Hakan Yandas was remanded amid an autumn betting scandal, and injuries mounted. A five-day swing brought a quarter-final cup exit after extra time to Konyaspor and a 3-0 derby defeat to eventual champions Galatasaray, after which he was dismissed. He said talks over an early extension had only just taken place.

He left with 26 wins in 45 matches. Schalke’s pragmatism still colours opinion despite a runners-up finish and Champions League last 16, yet he later won DFB-Pokal with RB Leipzig and with Belgium beat Germany, went 16 months unbeaten and exited Euro 2024 to France via an 85th-minute own goal. Italian media laud him, and Bologna chief Giovanni Sartori had pursued him for years.
