Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been recalled by England for March games against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley, ending a five-year wait.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported his inclusion shortly before the official announcement.

The Leeds striker hit red-hot form in November and December, scoring in six straight Premier League matches. He has 10 goals in 27 top-flight appearances and has played 2,031 minutes.

Signed as a free agent after leaving Everton, he has stayed fit as Leeds hoped with other injury-affected players such as Manor Solomon and Junior Firpo. His all-round work has been key in their push to remain above the drop zone.

Thomas Tuchel has named a 35-man squad and split the camp into two phases to widen the picture and heighten competition for plane tickets to the US. A second group, around 10 or 11 players, will arrive later before the Japan match.

Calvert-Lewin’s rivals for the central role include England’s first-choice striker Harry Kane and Tottenham Hotspur’s Dominic Solanke.
