The Hungarian midfielder moved to Anfield from RB Leipzig in 2023, since emerging as one of the Premier League’s finest players.

He has made 147 appearances to date for Liverpool, scoring 28 goals, and was voted the club’s player of the season by fans earlier this summer.

There were two years remaining on Szoboszlai’s previous deal and speculation surrounding his future, but that has been put to bed after he agreed to extend his stay with the club through to the summer of 2031.

Szoboszlai has already lifted the Premier League and Carabao Cup in Liverpool colours, but is prepared to keep pushing for more as the Reds look to bounce back from an underwhelming, trophyless 2025/26 campaign.

“There’s always more to come. I’m never happy,” said Szoboszlai after putting pen to paper on his new deal. “I’m happy with myself but I think I can do even better.

“I think that’s why I’m sitting here, because that pushed me since I was a kid: that it was never enough. And I’m thinking the same now.

“I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can.

“When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a little moment either.

“It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League. I’m ready to go for it.”

Liverpool exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals last season after losing 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain over two legs.

Szoboszlai’s extension brings a modicum of stability to a summer of considerable turnover at Liverpool, which has seen a new manager come through the door in Andoni Iraola and three highly experienced players - Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate - depart as free agents.

His experience will be vital in what is expected to be another season of transition for Liverpool.

Szoboszlai continued, adding that extending his Liverpool contract was among the happiest occasions of his life: “It’s maybe my biggest day.

“There are a couple in front of it – probably when I signed for Liverpool the first one and when I got my baby, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three.”

It has already been a busy summer for Liverpool, with centre-back Jeremy Jacquet and winger Victor Munoz joining from Rennes and Osasuna, respectively.

The club is yet to find successors for Salah and Robertson, though, with a busy close to the transfer window expected.
