Lazio have struck an agreement with Matias Vecino over a new contract which will keep the latter at Formello for at least another year.
The 33-year-old’s current deal will expire at the end of the month. In recent weeks, it was reported that the Uruguayan didn’t receive any calls from the club officials, so many thought he had already played his last match for the Biancocelesti.
Nevertheless, Maurizio Sarri’s return may have played a decisive role in changing the hierarchy’s stand. After all, Vecino played under the 66-year-old more than any other manager in his career.
Their collaboration dates back to their Empoli days in the 2014/15 season, before being reunited at Lazio in 2022. The midfielder made 111 appearances under Sarri, scoring 10 goals and creating six assists.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Lazio and Vecino have reached a full accord, with the player now set to sign a one-year contract with an option for a second year. The official announcement should follow in the coming hours.
This season, the former Fiorentina and Inter Milan star played second fiddle to Matteo Guendouzi and Nicolo Rovella in Marco Baroni’s 4-2-3-1 system. However, Sarri is expected to revert to a 4-3-3 formation, so Vecino might regain a starting role, especially if the management fails to sign proper reinforcement in the middle of the park.
