Dortmund shine without Guirassy as Brandt inspires Mainz win
Borussia Dortmund's 2 - 0 win away at Mainz on Saturday was overshadowed by the sudden injury of star striker Serhou Guirassy.
Just 20 minute before kick off, Guirassy pulled out of the starting lineup after feeling pain in his thigh during the warm up. Head coach Niko Kovac reacted quickly handing Julian Brandt surprise start in attack.
The switch paid off handsomely. Brandt delivered 2 assist while Karim Adeyemi scored 1 goal and won the red card that saw Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner sent off in the second half.
The victory keeps Dortmund unbeaten after 5 Bundesliga match this season (4 wins, 1 draw) just 2 point behind leaders Bayern Munich.
"It was surprise, of course but Brandt stepped in with 2 fantastic pass, He's doing fantastic job and is very important for us" Kovac said.
Brandt himself admitted it was sudden change of plan:
"Serhou'd pain, so I was thrown in. We played very well in the first half and it's a good sign that we've started strongly this season"..
