Marseille’s squad have been kept on site at La Commanderie after the 0-3 defeat at Nantes, with double sessions in a tense climate under close watch from the sporting department. According to L'Équipe, the reaction has not met Habib Beye’s expectations.

Players have been staying overnight since Monday, the camp extended day by day. The hierarchy, with owner Frank McCourt’s approval, chose not to ease the programme this time after a previously softened sanction following the 0-2 loss at Lorient on 18 April, and no end date is set, though it is probably after Sunday’s visit to Le Havre.

Some senior players, including fathers, are weary of a method used before and look mentally drained. Since taking charge, Beye’s staff have emphasised the physical side, pushing the limits during the Marbella camps. Periods of bonding followed by punishment, and days away from home, are wearing thin, and some even question the legality.

Sessions continue without much spark, and Beye halted Wednesday morning’s work after frustration with Mason Greenwood’s behaviour and the team’s obvious lack of desire.

Preparing for Le Havre on Sunday, he is still without Nayef Aguerd and now Hamed Junior Traoré, stretchered off at Nantes and ruled out for the rest of the season with an adductor lesion.

All of this is playing out in-house before a trip to Normandy to keep next season’s European hopes alive. Rennes visit on 17 May, and players are discussing the Vélodrome reception as supporter groups consider protests, probably a stadium-wide strike.
