The potential signing of Nathaniel Brown is sparking new discussions at FC Bayern. Dietmar Hamann sees this as a clear signal regarding Alphonso Davies’ future.

FC Bayern is on the verge of signing Nathaniel Brown. The Eintracht Frankfurt national team player has been considered the ideal solution for the left side of defense for weeks and is expected to play a central role in Vincent Kompany’s plans.

However, it is precisely this move that raises new questions surrounding Alphonso Davies. The Canadian had only recently extended his contract with FC Bayern through early 2025 and, with a reported annual salary of up to 20 million euros, is among the top earners on the squad.

For Dietmar Hamann, the situation is therefore noteworthy. In his column for the Münchner Abendzeitung, the TV expert interprets Munich’s intense interest in Brown as an indication that plans regarding Davies may have changed.

“One of the positive standouts on the German national team is Nathaniel Brown. A great player. I said a few weeks ago that he would be my first choice at left-back in a back four. The national team coach seems to see it similarly. Brown has pace, he’s strong in the tackle, very clever, a very good soccer player,” Hamann explained.

The former national team player can therefore understand why Bayern is taking such a close interest in the Frankfurt player. At 22, Brown is one of the most promising German players in his position, and his dynamism and versatility make him a perfect fit for Munich’s requirements.

Hamann questions Davies’ future

For Hamann, this leads to a clear conclusion. “And a player in whom FC Bayern is strongly interested must be of interest. Brown is only 22 and a German international. But: Bayern only extended left-back Alphonso Davies’ contract last year—and gave him an astronomical salary.”

From the 52-year-old’s perspective, a Brown transfer would therefore be more than just an additional reinforcement for the squad: “The Brown transfer would be a clear indication that Bayern no longer plans to keep Davies.”

While FC Bayern officials are said to still value Davies, the Canadian is no longer considered unsellable. Sky recently reported that Munich would be open to talks if the right offer came along.

However, this is exactly where Hamann sees the real problem. “But can you actually sell the Canadian?” he wrote.

For months, clubs from Saudi Arabia have been cited as the main potential suitors. Whether Davies himself, at just 25 years old, would be willing to leave Europe, however, seems questionable.

Should Brown actually move to Munich, the competition for the left-back position would intensify significantly. For Davies, this could become his biggest sporting challenge since joining FC Bayern.
