International duty often offers clarity over a player’s development, yet Jeremie Frimpong returns to Liverpool under a thicker cloud than before. Dutch media were left unsure where to place him after a mixed display against Malta, reopening the long-standing debate over his best position.
AD rated Frimpong’s performance a 6/10 and wrote: “The right winger had quickly saddled his guard, Ryan Camenzuli, with a yellow card, and the attacker regularly raced towards the byline.“A cross to Cody Gakpo after fifteen minutes could have resulted in a goal, but the Liverpool forward fired over.“Frimpong, after the break, fired a shot that caught Bonello’s fists and was substituted midway through the second half, with Donyell Malen replacing him.”

De Telegraaf were harsher, settling for a 5/10. “His performance against Malta will reignite the debate about whether Frimpong is actually a winger,” they wrote.“He was sought after early on. But he didn’t start the match well. His first crosses went generously over the penalty area. He doesn’t have a great cross and is also far too hasty for a winger.“After a good move, he often doesn’t know how to follow through.”
Arne Slot expected Frimpong to inject instant creativity into Liverpool’s right flank. A returning full back with attacking instincts, pace to burn and a record of 17 goal contributions last season looked like the ideal successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold. Instead, both his defending and end product have raised doubts.
Deploying him deeper exposes his positional discipline, using him further forward highlights his erratic final ball. He accelerates past markers with ease, then hesitates in the vital moment. Crosses drift over targets, shots meet goalkeepers rather than corners. His strengths are obvious, his purpose is not.
Liverpool have bigger problems than settling one role, yet delaying a clear plan for Frimpong risks wasting a uniquely gifted player. The raw materials are all there, now Liverpool must finally decide what they intend to build with them.
