The Dutch press can’t get enough of Go Ahead Eagles the day after their cup win over AZ Alkmaar. The ‘stunt team’ from Deventer delivered an admirable performance in the Kuip. Compliments go to technical director Paul Bosvelt and general manager Jan Willem van Dop, among others.

‘De Kuip belongs to Kowet’, headlines De Telegraaf after the cup final in Rotterdam-Zuid. ‘It was a close call, but the popular club from Deventer with its rich history managed to fight back from a beaten position against AZ and, after winning a penalty series, to claim the KNVB Cup.’

The newspaper speaks of a huge party in Deventer. ‘The joy was enormous for the club that played a marginal role in professional football for years, but nevertheless, remained deeply anchored in the hearts of the loyal supporters.’

Special attention goes to goalkeeper Jari De Busser, who had the game of his life in De Kuip. ‘He was the big hero. The Belgian kept a world-class game.’

‘Instant hero status in Deventer’

The Algemeen Dagblad is impressed by the ‘stunt team’ Go Ahead Eagles. ‘What a party, the team from Deventer fights past AZ in the last minute and then wins on penalties.’ In Deventer, Jari De Busser, Mats Deijl and Julius Dirksen are unstoppable. ‘The cup final gave all players instant hero status, but that applies to them, in particular.’

The AD points to the development that Go Ahead Eagles has been going through in recent years. Compliments are given to technical director Paul Bosvelt and director Jan Willem van Dop.

‘Things started to go well under Kees van Wonderen, successor René Hake was also a success. And with Paul Simonis, the success story became even bigger. Bosvelt and Van Dop brought gems of players to the club and gave Simonis, who is unknown to the general public, the chance to become a trainer.’
