Eddie Howe said Newcastle were denied a clear penalty in their 2-2 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.
Newcastle had led by two goals, then Chelsea reduced the deficit at the 50th minute. Soon after, Anthony Gordon went down under Trevoh Chalobah’s challenge in the box, but no spot-kick was given.
"I think it was clearly a penalty," Howe said. "It was a clear penalty. Anywhere else on the pitch it would be a foul. He tackled Anthony aggressively, too aggressively in my view, so it is an obvious foul," he added, speaking to TNT Sports.
The Premier League review centre deemed the contact lateral in a shielding action and that the ball was within playing distance. Howe rejected that view, saying, "No, I do not think so. The defender is only looking at Anthony, not the ball, and it is too aggressive."
He also criticised Newcastle’s second-half display. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca did not view the incident as a penalty and was content with a point, saying, "I think there are not many teams who, 2-0 down at half-time, against this team in this stadium, can come back."
