Eder Militao will miss the World Cup with Brazil after suffering a serious left thigh injury. According to Globo, the Real Madrid defender is set to undergo surgery on Tuesday.

The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Militao was hurt a week ago against Alavés, a 2-1 win, and departed at half-time, with the problem not initially looking serious. Real Madrid had already feared a relapse after a previous four-month lay-off.

He saw a specialist in Turku, Finland, on Tuesday for a definitive opinion. The assessment found a severe issue with a risk of complete tendon rupture.

A comeback is hoped for October. At 28, Militao has been hampered by nine injuries and more than 600 days out, and now looks towards 2030.
