Go Ahead Eagles have unveiled Kenzo Goudmijn more than 24 hours after the transfer deadline. The 23-year-old joins on loan from Derby County. With this move, Goudmijn returns to the Netherlands after a year-long absence.
Goudmijn started his football career by progressing through the AZ youth academy. He was later loaned out by the Alkmaar side to Sparta Rotterdam and Excelsior. In 2024, he left Alkmaar for good to pursue an adventure in the English Championship.
At that time, Goudmijn also attracted interest from Dutch clubs, including Heracles Almelo. The club were still in the market for the midfielder, but they ultimately missed out. As was reported on Tuesday evening, Goudmijn is now moving to Deventer.
Go Ahead’s technical manager Marc van Hintum spoke about the signing: “He’s a player with qualities that aren’t often available on loan. His experience at home and abroad, combined with his creativity and energy, make him an absolute asset to our squad.”
“When I realised this was the best move for me, it quickly became clear that I wanted to play for Go Ahead Eagles this season,” Goudmijn said on the club’s channel. “I expect to have a lot of fun in this fantastic stadium and I want to help the team have a great season.”
Goudmijn will be playing for Go Ahead in the Europa League. “I’ve always thought this is a great club. When I played here in the past, I loved the atmosphere. Of course, it will be a tough season with the Europa League, the Eredivisie, and the cup tournament, but if you take good care of your body, you can handle a lot. I’m glad I’ve already experienced that, and I really hope I can make a difference here.”
Goudmijn made 44 appearances for Derby County, but lost his starting spot towards the end of last season. This season, too, it didn’t look like he’d get much playing time in the Championship, and Go Ahead were looking for an additional midfield option due to their busy schedule in the Eredivisie and Europa League.
