Eintracht Frankfurt’s striker Elye Wahi was arrested for alleged fixing offences weeks before his participation at the World Cup, according to The Athletic. French police arrested the player on May 29th as he was accused of deliberately earning a yellow card in OGC Nice’s last home game of the Ligue 1 season.
That ruled him out from the first-leg relegation/promotion playoff tie against Saint-Etienne, although he starred in the return fixture with a brace to keep his club in France’s top-division. After his successful loan spell, at least on the pitch, Wahi will initially return to Frankfurt after the World Cup.
A spokesperson for Marseille public prosecutor’s office confirmed the incident to The Athletic. Wahi did play in Ivory Coast’s opening World Cup victory over Ecuador as the woodwork denied him a goal before Amad’s 90th-minute winner. RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande won the “Superior Player of the Match” award.
Ivory Coast will face Germany in Toronto on Saturday night. Wahi was scoreless in his 18-month Bundesliga spell before returning to Ligue 1 on a loan deal. The Eagles aren’t expected to keep the player for next season.
