Manchester United forward Ella Toone paid an emotional tribute to her late father, who sadly passed away a year ago, after she scored during the club’s opener against Leicester City.

United sink Leicester

United kicked off their Women’s Super League campaign with a dominant 4-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday at Leigh Sports Village.

Toone broke the deadlock after just 13 minutes, firing a superb effort well past Janina Leitzig.

United added a second goal soon after through striker Elisabeth Terland, who headed home for her fifth of the campaign across all competitions.

Melvine Malard made it 3-0 with another header, this time converting Dominique Janssen’s spectacular delivery. Malard added a fourth from the edge of the box in the 87th minute to send United to the top of the WSL table.

After the final whistle, Toone took to social media and penned a message in honour of her father, who passed away on September 7, 2024, just three days before his 60th birthday.

Toone’s message

Toone wrote on Instagram, “1 year without you, Dad, it’s been the toughest year of my life, but I had comfort in knowing you were always with me.”

“I miss you more than anything, and the feeling of entering another year without you kills me, but I keep going to make you proud.”

“Thank you to everyone who has got me through it all, my family, friends and my teammates. You would have loved that today, & as always, it was all for you.”

“Here’s to another 365 days of thinking, talking and laughing about you and all the memories we made.”

“Cheers, Dad, I love you.”

United are back in action on Thursday, when they face Brann in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League qualifying round.
