Dan Burn has wondered whether Elliot Anderson would be in the same place had he not left Newcastle, after the Nottingham Forest midfielder shone on his World Cup debut for England. Anderson set up Jude Bellingham in Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Croatia, underlining his rise for club and country.

According to Nottingham Post, Forest bought Anderson for £35 million in summer 2024, and Eddie Howe had said Newcastle did not want to sell but were under financial rules pressure.

Regular starts at the City Ground have followed for the 23-year-old, and Burn is glad it has worked out for his former team-mate. He was speaking at an England press conference before Tuesday’s game with Ghana.

He said Anderson had not wanted to leave Newcastle, then posed whether staying would have brought the same opportunities. He praised the midfielder’s calmness and desire for the ball, qualities that fit the manager’s intensity.

Burn welcomed Anderson’s strong start after the death of his mother, Helen, earlier this year.

Anderson will be vital for England and Thomas Tuchel as they aim to go all the way at this tournament. Manchester City have already tested Forest’s resolve twice, the latest offer worth more than £120 million. Talks are understood to be ongoing, with an expectation he could ultimately move to the Etihad Stadium this summer.
