Nottingham Forest paid tribute to Elliot Anderson at the City Ground, with Morgan Gibbs-White marking his goal against Porto by raising the midfielder’s shirt.
Anderson was unavailable for the Europa League quarter-final second leg following the death of his mother, Helen. He had been absent from training on Wednesday.
Home supporters chanted “Geordie Maradona” in the opening minutes in support of the 23-year-old.
Gibbs-White struck in the 12th minute, then lifted a shirt bearing Anderson’s name and the number 8, alongside the message: “Family first, we are all with you.”
His goal put Forest 2-1 ahead on aggregate. The first leg in Portugal finished 1-1 last week.
