The Emiliano Martínez to Manchester United story is unlikely to go away anytime soon. Perhaps it will end with his unveiling as a Red Devil.

Following Aston Villa’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, their financial issues with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations have necessitated a major sale.

And Martínez, one of their highest-value assets, could be the one they cash in on.

Although linked with moves to the Saudi Professional League and Turkish champions Galatasaray, rumours of the Argentina international joining United continue to spread.

The World Cup winner is more persistently linked than any other goalkeeper.

With reports claiming United even attempted to sign him in the winter as an upgrade on André Onana, many now believe INEOS may look to seal that deal this summer.

After the winter transfer window, Onana, though given the benefit of the doubt, went on to struggle to save his spot as United’s first-choice goalie.

Many feel his shaky performances have cost him favour at Carrington, and speaking to his local media this weekend; even he seemed unsure whether he will still be at the club next season.

While the Cameroon international’s future remains uncertain, new updates from Argentina suggest the picture is clearer on the other side.

Martínez believes he will be United’s number one next season

Speaking on ESPN Argentina, journalist Leo Paradizo has revealed that Martínez is convinced that United boss Rúben Amorim and his technical team want him to replace Onana.

“Dibu Martínez already knows that Manchester United want him in goal next season. Onana will leave, and they’re going after the Argentina national team goalkeeper,” Paradizo claimed.

Aside from pimping his attack this summer, Amorim needed to sort out his goalkeeping department. Surely, the days of shaky goalkeeping affecting his defenders’ performance should be a thing of the past.

And if the confident Martinez were to find himself between the sticks at Old Trafford, there’s every reason to believe that the defensive side of United’s game will become much better than it has been of late.
