Emmanuel Macron offered his support to Kylian Mbappé on Monday evening after the France captain was targeted by racist attacks from a Paraguayan senator.
The French presidency said in a statement that it stands with Mbappé and the France team, adding that Paraguay’s president had written to Emmanuel Macron condemning the remarks, as had the Paraguayan foreign ministry.
Mbappé was singled out by senator Celeste Amarilla, a member of the Parti libéral radical authentique. He responded on X, describing her as despicable and unworthy of her office.
The French Football Federation has reported the matter to prosecutors with a view to legal action. Assistant coach Guy Stéphan labelled her conduct unworthy, abhorrent and scandalous.
Earlier on Monday, Minister for Sports, Youth and the Voluntary Sector Marina Ferrari had also expressed support for the forward.
