Michael Olise has spoken out publicly for the first time since the end of the 2026 World Cup. The FC Bayern forward looks back on the tournament with mixed feelings. While the Frenchman can celebrate a personal record, his disappointment over missing out on the World Cup title outweighs it.

France entered the World Cup as one of the heavy favorites but ultimately had to settle for fourth place. For Michael Olise, the Équipe Tricolore’s performance is a major disappointment, as he made clear in a detailed statement on Instagram.

“The fact that we weren’t able to bring the trophy home is a huge disappointment. This isn’t how we imagined this World Cup would end when the tournament began,” wrote the 24-year-old.

Personal record can’t ease the disappointment

For Olise, the World Cup was a special tournament despite the disappointing result on the field. The Bayern Munich pro set the record for the most assists in World Cup history. Nevertheless, he made it clear that this milestone means little to him as long as the title remains out of reach.

“Wearing the French national team jersey at a World Cup has always been a dream come true for me—and it always will be. Even though we weren’t able to win the trophy, I’m proud to have set the record for the most assists in World Cup history.”

At the same time, the attacking player emphasized what really matters to him: “Above all, though, I would much rather be here to say that we won the World Cup together—with my teammates, the staff, the coaches, and all the fans of the French national team.”

Emotional Thanks to Deschamps

At the end of his statement, Olise addressed some personal words to former national team coach Didier Deschamps, who had first called him up to the French national team. “I’d also like to thank the national team coach for calling me up to the squad for the first time and for believing in me even during the toughest moments. I’ll always be grateful to you and wish you only the very best, whatever path you choose to take next.”

Despite the disappointment, the Bayern star is looking optimistically toward the future. “That remains the goal that will continue to drive us, and we hope that in the future we can bring you many more moments of joy and unforgettable memories that you can share with us.”

With these emotional words, Olise draws a line under the World Cup and is now refocusing his attention on FC Bayern. After his extended vacation following the tournament, the forward is expected back in Munich in the coming weeks and is set to play a key role in the new season under Vincent Kompany.
