Borussia Dortmund have extended captain Emre Can’s contract by one year, keeping him at the club until 2027. The club said in a statement that he has signed the new deal.
The announcement followed speculation earlier in the week. Can’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of this season, and his Dortmund stint will now move into an eighth year.
Can said he was delighted to remain at BVB, thanking those around the club for their support. He added that his focus is to regain fitness quickly, rejoin his team-mates on the pitch and help the club achieve success.
Sporting director Lars Ricken hailed the captain as a standard-setting leader who always puts the team first. He said the club pledged support immediately after Can’s serious injury and want him to concentrate fully on recovery before returning.
The 32-year-old has been out since February with a cruciate ligament injury suffered in the 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.
