Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin made his England return in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay at Wembley, and is now due to leave the camp before Tuesday’s friendly against Japan at Wembley.
England said in a statement that a revised squad of 27 players are preparing for the Japan game, with eight to depart, including Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori and Calvert-Lewin. John Stones will return to Manchester City for assessment after an issue in training, while Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Arsenal’s Noni Madueke will go back to their clubs with knocks. Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka will also return to Arsenal for medical assessment.
The statement added that Rice and Saka had arrived on Friday along with nine others, namely Dean Henderson, Nico O’Reilly, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi, Dan Burn, Elliot Anderson, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane.
Thomas Tuchel rested several stars, with captain Harry Kane left out. Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke started and Calvert-Lewin began on the bench, against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay.
Calvert-Lewin replaced Solanke soon after the interval and linked play brightly, but headed wide from close range. He then contested the corner that reached Ben White to tap in at the far post for his first England goal. A late, contentious penalty gave Uruguay a draw.
