The 51-year-old has signed an 18-month contract after talks with the Football Association and will become the third foreign coach in Three Lions history after the late Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Tuchel was a hugely popular figure at Chelsea during his trophy-laden stint at Stamford Bridge between 2021 and 2022, during which he won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Widely regarded as one of the elite managers in the European game, Tuchel had been strongly touted for a return to the Premier League after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season.

Manchester United reportedly retained an interest in Tuchel, who had been tipped to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Still speaking about his somewhat surprise decision to take the England job, Tuchel said on Wednesday: “They [the FA] made it clear it's about football and that got me excited. I wasn't sure this was the job for me because the schedule is very different. I always wanted to come back to England, that was my big goal.

"The offer came at the right time and we found a vision to share. Now I have to live up to it. I know there are some trophies and I want to help that happen."
