England will go to the 2026 World Cup without a single Liverpool player, the first time for 40 years at a major tournament. Thomas Tuchel named a 26-man squad on Friday for the finals in North America, running from 11 June to 19 July.

On paper it is a surprise for the country’s most decorated club with 20 Premier League titles, level with Manchester United. Yet Arne Slot has often fielded an XI without English players this season. Trent Alexander-Arnold, a regular last term on the right, left for Real Madrid last summer and has not been selected either.

Curtis Jones, who has six caps and one goal, endured a mixed campaign and started roughly every other league match. The 25-year-old midfielder was not included in Tuchel’s expanded 35-man squad for the March camp.

Joe Gomez, capped 15 times, has struggled with injuries and played a little over 1300 minutes in all competitions. The centre-back has not featured for England since Euro 2024.

Liverpool, fifth in the Premier League, host Brentford on Sunday as they look to end a testing season on a positive note. Champions League qualification is close to assured, helped by Aston Villa’s Europa League triumph, which could make sixth place a route into next season’s competition.
