Argentina reached the World Cup final in Atlanta on Wednesday, revived by Enzo Fernandez’s 85th-minute strike. England captain Harry Kane delivered a subdued display.
Anthony Gordon had put England ahead on 55 minutes, before Fernandez levelled and a second Argentina goal followed at 90+2. L'Équipe’s ratings gave Fernandez eight and Kane three.
Lionel Messi was contained before the interval, aside from a burst that saw Anderson booked on 37. After England’s goal he drifted right and dictated, involved in both strikes. He was marked at seven.
Alexis Mac Allister delivered his best tournament display. He forced the issue after the break, twice heading with one against the post on 76, then hit the base of the post to spark the second goal at 90+2. He received seven.
Djed Spence impressed with forceful runs and key tackles, notably a superb challenge on Giuliano Simeone on 57, though he was just short for the second Argentina goal. His rating was seven. Gordon earned six, adding a cross on 11 and an individual dribble on 15.
Jude Bellingham dribbled in patches but conceded a needless foul on Mac Allister on 23 and was late closing Fernandez on 85, earning three.
Kane misplaced passes, took risks near his own box, and did not register a shot. Nahuel Molina was at fault for the England goal, beaten by Gordon on Rogers’s cross, and was replaced by Montiel on 73, rated four.
